The Japanese word Reiki is often translated as ‘universal life-force energy’ and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing. This tradition was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things, we are alive because life force energy is flowing through us. The energy flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force energy nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well-being. When this flow of energy is disrupted by negative thoughts or feelings, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break and fall away. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, allowing the lifeforce energy to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Reiki treatment is a process that anyone can enjoy in the normal course of their life. Reiki can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatments and often helps to provide emotional support during recovery.
Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive, hands on healing technique which channels universal life-force energy into the body of the recipient. It is a holistic therapy for treating the body, mind and soul, balancing and harmonising the whole person.
During a Reiki session, you will lie down on a treatment couch, remaining fully clothed, covered in a light blanket. Hands will be gently placed in a series of non-intrusive positions on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation. The whole person is treated rather than specific areas.
Each person experiences Reiki differently depending on their individual needs at the time. Clients may or may not feel sensations during a Reiki treatment. Clients have reported feelings of heat, areas of cold, tingling and pulsating sensations throughout the body, waves of energy and also visualisations of vivid colours. Other clients have had an emotional response, indicating that shifts are taking place, allowing harmony to be restored.
A holistic approach means treating the mind, body and soul, as a whole, in order to restore balance and improve general health and well-being. The benefits of Reiki include:
